THE
CREW is funded primarily through a government abstinence-only
mentoring grant. Although the program has also received
private funding, the driving force behind THE CREW’s
new look are the proposals outlined in the grant. The two
main objectives stated in the grant are as follows:
• Provide THE CREW members with mentoring services
that build self-esteem and prepare them to make healthy
decisions about sexual activity.
This
will be accomplished through the following:
• Monthly small group meetings involving a time of mentoring
in addition to technical training for Abstinence Education Events
(meetings are currently held every Tuesday for middle and high
school students).
• 3 Combined Groups Mentoring Activities (weekend
activities) and a summer camp
• Provide THE CREW members the opportunity to present
abstinence education to their peers, thus promoting self-esteem,
connection with the community, self-sufficiency, team-building
skills, assertiveness, and other social and emotional skills
This
will be accomplished through the following:
• Abstinence Education Events in schools, churches, and other area community-based
venues
THE CREW is open to applicants between grades 6-12 and will
not discriminate in the acceptance of applicants based upon
any other factors except those conflicting with the purpose
and mission of THE CREW. In order to be a member of THE
CREW there are expectations one must fulfill both prior
to acceptance and while on THE CREW in order to remain a
member. The expectations are as follows:
• Applicant must have attended an Abstinence Education
Event prior to application
• Applicant must make/have made a commitment to sexual
abstinence until marriage
• Applicant must fill out application form completely
and attach at least two reference letters from non-relative
community members
• THE CREW member must make every effort to attend the
small group mentoring meetings. Meetings are currently held every
Tuesday (middle school CREW from 6:00-8:00 pm and high school CREW
from 7:00-9:00 pm).
• THE CREW member must attend at least 2 of the 3
combined mentoring activities (weekend activities)
• THE CREW member must attend summer camp unless a note from parent excuses THE CREW
member due to commitments made prior to joining THE CREW
• THE CREW member must remain behaviorally consistent
with the purpose and mission of THE CREW
• THE CREW member must take part in Abstinence Education
Events as needed
